directorygames | Fortnite is Getting a Battle Royale Mode0
Maybe building a fort to survive waves of strangely adorable zombies is boring. Maybe you want more PvP. Maybe even a Fortnite Battle Royale mode. Well, if you’re playing the game in early access, your wish is Epic Games’ command.
Fortnite’s take on battle royale comes by way of Epic Games’ Unreal Tournament team, who developed the mode in parallel with the core game and found it so much fun, they decided to open it to public testing. The new mode will stuff 100 players into a Battle Bus and have them drop into one large map to see who will be the last one standing. The new mode will feature the same building mechanics of the core game – including traps – but will add them to the new hotness free-for-all PvP mode.
The post announcing battle royale’s arrival confirms the obvious inspiration for the new game mode. “We love Battle Royale games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version,” reads the post.
The announcement makes a point to state that development of the battle royale mode is completely separate from the core Fortnite game in order to make sure balancing of one does not interfere with the balance of the other.
Fortnite Battle Royale mode is now available on the game’s public test server and will officially go live on Tuesday, September 26th for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Mac. A trailer heralding the new mode can be seen below.
And so begins the Great Battle Royale Gold Rush of 2017. With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds already proving the mode can be a wildly successful standalone game, we wholly anticipate similar modes or individual games to start their run to the new shiny. Still, we’ll give Fortnite the benefit of the doubt and see just what their battle royale mode is all about before leaping to too many cynical conclusions.
